Case Study on Once upon a Time In America

  1. Your case study is l organised and includes interesting and appropriate references to other thriller films which use and develop noir conventions. Points to consider:
    1) Your analysis of the connotations of the rain and the dark are strong, but avoid generalisations, for example you say on the slide where you discuss locations, ….that the same location is used in “The Third Man”. Instead you could have said something like.. chiaroscuro lighting and dark city streets are a feature used in “The Third Man” and are thus a blue print of a noir thriller, thus Sergio Leone establishes the noir credentials of the film in the opening sequences.

    2) I like your comments about the menace of the descending lift and your references to films that use this convention.

    3) The femme fatale …you say she always dies!!! This is inaccurate. You need to identify films where the femme fatale is punished, killed off or domesticated. There are all kinds of subtle representations of this archetype.

    4) Also some perceptive comments about the anti hero archetype, I am pleased you understand that the position of Noodles in an opium den establishes Noodles as an anti hero.

So next step James, avoid generalisations. Always follow up with examples.
Proficient with ambitious inter textual references.
